Chapter 7: Royal Contest

Every prince knows it is his duty to be married, but not every prince is keen to be married. Take Prince Harry for instance. He was in no hurry to be married, especially after what happened to his younger brother, Prince Edward. He married Princess Henrietta, a beautiful girl who had been so charming to him and to all about her before the marriage, but who became a real cow after the marriage. She had fooled Prince Edward, who was now miserable, as were her servants who she abused and mistreated.

Prince Harry was determined that he would not be tricked and he could not be tricked if he didn't get married. But his father, the King, was getting old and Prince Harry was the heir to the throne. The King kept telling him to get married and have children. Whenever Prince Harry tried to change the subject the King would shake his head and mutter, “Time's running out my son.”

Finally the King's patience was exhausted. He summoned Prince Harry and told him that if he was not engaged to be married in 60 days, the King himself would choose a princess. Before Prince Harry could protest, the King added, “And I believe Princess Henrietta has a sister, although she is said to lack Henrietta's charm and beauty. You can leave me now and think about that.”

Prince Harry was horrified to think he could have a worse wife than his brother Prince Edward. He had to find a princess, but how could he find out the real person before it was too late? And even if she was a nice person, would she love him?

He thought about his problem all that night, tossing and turning in his sleep. The next morning he saw Prince Edward at breakfast who greeted him with raised eyebrows.

“Good morning brother, did you forget to sleep?”

Prince Harry explained his problem. Prince Edward thought for a moment and said, “It's so hard to know what your princess is really like until you get married. The only people who know are their servants; they hide nothing from them.”

“True brother, so true,” said Prince Harry, nodding. He paused, deep in thought. “That's it! I know how I can find out the real person.”

“What, ask the servants?” said Prince Edward.

“Exactly, except they will be my servants.” He then went and told the King he was going to invite three eligible princesses to come and stay with him at his country estate and that he would choose one of them to be his bride.

“Assuming she will have me, of course,” he added.

The King laughed. “You have such funny ideas, as if the princess will have a say in it. She will do what her father tells her to do.
